This <strong>spectacular result for such a small site testifies to the value of a place<\/strong> which offers multiple resources to birds crossing the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But be careful, these observations<strong> are sometimes unique<\/strong>, one should therefore not expect to find the species <strong>Very Rare (TR)<\/strong> at each visit. There &quot;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reserve-ornithologique-du-teich.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Liste-des-especes-observees-ROT-avril-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>list of birds observed on the Teich Ornithological Reserve from 1972 to 2023<\/strong><\/a>\u201d is constantly under construction!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Reserve acts very actively for the conservation of the wild birds that frequent it, in particular rare or threatened species which are the subject of protection policies on a National or European scale. The diversity of its environments offers essential resources <strong>ducks, spoonbills, geese or waders<\/strong> who migrate via stopovers and must<strong> rest and feed throughout their long and perilous journeys.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bassin houses the largest <strong>dwarf eelgrass herbarium and important eelgrass beds&nbsp;<\/strong>: a habitat which plays a role of refuge and nursery for <strong>fish, cuttlefish, seahorse, shrimp\u2026 and for the geese<\/strong> brave who winter each year by the tens of thousands on the Bassin: <strong>more than 18,000 in 2023!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-6b655eaa alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2 migration periods to distinguish: <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Premarital migration<\/strong>&nbsp;(\u201cbefore the wedding\u201d) or \u201cspring\u201d or even \u201cascent\u201d migration, which lasts from the end of January (Greylag Goose, Northern Pintail, etc.) to the beginning of June.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Postnuptial migration<\/strong>&nbsp;(\u201cafter the wedding\u201d) or \u201cautumn\u201d or even \u201cdescent\u201d migration, which begins in June and ends in December. Of course, the movement of a maximum of species takes place in the middle period of each migration (March-May and September-November).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>During these two phases of the life of migrants, tens of thousands of birds can frequent the Reserve for a few hours or a few days. <strong>These two periods are those when diversity is greatest on the site, and it is common to contact more than 100 species during a visit.<\/strong> It is also during migrations that we have the greatest chance<strong> to observe rare birds, coming from distant America or Central Asia.<\/strong> But like everywhere in nature, nothing is acquired in advance, and many parameters will modify<strong> the \u201cpredictions\u201d of the best naturalists regarding the \u201cprogramming\u201d of the passage or stopover of these birds. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-81c5e7b5 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Of the tranquility of autumn &amp; winter\u2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"835\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/bassin-arcachon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Design-sans-titre-2023-11-30T115532.492.png\" alt=\"- - Bassin d&#039;Arcachon\" class=\"wp-image-57166\" title=\"- - Bassin d&#039;Arcachon\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bassin-arcachon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Design-sans-titre-2023-11-30T115532.492.png 835w, https:\/\/bassin-arcachon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Design-sans-titre-2023-11-30T115532.492-600x431.png 600w, https:\/\/bassin-arcachon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Design-sans-titre-2023-11-30T115532.492-768x552.png 768w, https:\/\/bassin-arcachon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Design-sans-titre-2023-11-30T115532.492-18x12.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 835px) 100vw, 835px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">White Stilt \/ Black-tailed Godwit \/ Marsh Snipe \u2013 \u00a9 Erick LAUCHER \/ Marion DAL BELLO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The place to be: <\/strong>It is<strong> THERE<\/strong> phase of the year when we meet the<strong>he largest concentrations of birds on the Reserve<\/strong> ! A particularly interesting season for <strong>observe so-called \u201cwintering\u201d species, <\/strong>which gather in spectacular flights on the water bodies of the Reserve!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We observe <strong>from autumn <\/strong>gatherings of <strong>Dunlins, Curlews, Pied Avocets or Black-tailed Godwits. <\/strong>These birds called <strong>\u201cshorebirds\u201d<\/strong> feed on the foreshore at low tide and on the Reserve at high tide. It\u2019s also the time to come and observe the subtle plumage of the <strong>Teal: the smallest of our dabbling ducks. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>migrants from northern and eastern Europe<\/strong> stop in number to <strong>spend the winter in the Reserve<\/strong>. And it\u2019s not the Great Spotted Woodpecker, the Gray Heron or even the Great Black-backed Gull that will tell you the opposite. The nesting period extends from the end of January, when the first <strong>White storks<\/strong> return to their nests, and until the end of August with the flight of the last chicks of<strong> water rail <\/strong>born on the Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Passerines are particularly common, the most common like the <strong>Robin<\/strong>, up to the rarest like the <strong>Bluethroat with white mirror.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it peaks for the majority of species<strong> between April and June.<\/strong> Most species are very discreet during this breeding period, however several leave<strong> admire their offspring up close to the public, from observatories or trails: <\/strong>Black-headed Gulls, White Stilts, Little Ringed Plovers, Black Kites, Belon Shelducks\u2026!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-de6f1fd4 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main species:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"835\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/bassin-arcachon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Design-sans-titre-2023-11-30T114821.806.png\" alt=\"- - Bassin d&#039;Arcachon\" class=\"wp-image-57157\" title=\"- - Bassin d&#039;Arcachon\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bassin-arcachon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Design-sans-titre-2023-11-30T113634.927.png 835w, https:\/\/bassin-arcachon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Design-sans-titre-2023-11-30T113634.927-600x431.png 600w, https:\/\/bassin-arcachon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Design-sans-titre-2023-11-30T113634.927-768x552.png 768w, https:\/\/bassin-arcachon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Design-sans-titre-2023-11-30T113634.927-18x12.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 835px) 100vw, 835px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Marion Dal Bello<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The site has become <strong>a privileged destination for professional or amateur photographers.<\/strong> Its main advantages are:<strong> the diversity of landscapes and species, the regularity of a potential spectacle throughout the year, the sometimes disconcerting proximity of birds, their increasing habit of the public and the design of the observatories.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Teich site was recently recognized as the<strong> 7th best site in Europe for bird watching, and 1st in France<\/strong> by the Birdwatchers community!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-c8377104 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit the Reserve: <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The visit to the Teich Ornithological Reserve is done on foot, along <strong>of a 6km loop trail.<\/strong> The route is very accessible, even in street shoes. A minimum <strong>3 to 4 hours is expected <\/strong>to tour the site while observing the birds. A shortcut is possible for people traveling with difficulty or with young children <strong>(approximately 2.5 km)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>20 observation cabins<\/strong> punctuate the trail in the most favorable places for seeing birds.
