7. How do the tides work on the Arcachon Bassin?

The phenomenon of tides is the result of of two forces : on the one hand, the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun on the Earth causing deformation not only of the oceans but also of the Earth's crust, and on the other hand, the centrifugal force (Coriolis force) associated with the Earth's rotation on its axis.

These combined forces create a tidal wave that can be observed as a daily oscillation in sea level., either cyclical movements of flow (rising tide) and ebb (falling tide). Strong at the equinoxes and weak during the solstices, the tides vary depending on the position of the Moon and Sun relative to the Earth's axis, defined by the Equator.
