La Hume in the Roaring Twenties

La Hume, an isolated and economically deprived neighbourhood of Gujan-Mestras, was nevertheless to see its fortunes change during the interwar period. Thanks to the drive of Frédéric Lestrade, he went on to create, in less than a year, a seaside resort that would attract ever-increasing numbers of visitors. The prosperous ‘Roaring Twenties’ breathed new life into the resort and saw the emergence of new places of entertainment previously unknown to the area. Shops, homes and entertainment venues helped to develop the local economy, but above all, they attracted holidaymakers from all corners of France and Europe. This small, previously forgotten neighbourhood was to become a must-visit destination on the Arcachon peninsula.
